Our Reviews

2013 Monchiero Rocche di Castiglione Barolo DOCG, 96 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, tip top tipple – "Beautiful aromatic herb and floral perfume here, red fruits, crushed rocks, plenty of spice, liquorice root and orange peel. Medium bodied, but dense and powerful, with packed down stony tannin, fresh acidity, layers of spice and amaro herbs, cherry and red fruits, and this soaring precise finish dusted with smashed rock tannin. Great wine. Transparent. Will age for decades." Drink 2023-2038+

2013 Paitin Sorì Paitin (Serraboella) Barbaresco, 95 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front - "Deep, brooding style for a Barbaresco with dark cherry, spice, suede and submerged floral and dried herb notes. Medium bodied, but tense and well-packed, has a kind of high cocoa dark chocolate bitterness and flavour, suede tannin and savoury almost ferrous thing going on, and a finish that's long and stretched out by tannin and juicy liquorice. Wonderful wine. Needs a huge decant if doing a 'road test', or just leave it alone for quite a few years." Drink 2023-2033+

2013 Ruggeri Corsini Bussia Barolo DOCG, 94+ Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front – "Rugged. Potent. Powerful. Liquorice, dark cherry, sage and spice, squeezed orange peel perfume. Full bodied, plush deep fruit laced with fleshy firm tannin, red fruits and amaro herbs, minerally black tea tannin stamps its authority out on the long fresh finish. There's a touch of oak spice here as a young wine, but nothing untoward, and already meshing with the bold fruit." Drink 2020-2033+

2015 Mark Haisma Gevrey Chambertin, 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front – "Strawberry, raspberry and spice, a little aniseed and perfume, sweet stalk and herb discreetly in the background. It's light and finely wrought, but does not lack flavour and impact, delicate lacy acidity and a gentle feathering of tannin, fresh strawberries dusted with spice, subtle earthiness, and a cool fresh finish of fine length, lightly chalky tannin teasing it out. It's a textbook example of delivering a knockout punch, without coming over all heavy. Onya Mark." Drink 2020-2035

2015 Mark Haisma Gevrey Chambertin, Jamie Goode, 92-94 Points - "40 whole bunch, with some new wood. Good structure, with a savoury spicy edge to the sweet cherry and raspberry fruit. Dense and a bit grippy but has lovely sweet fruit profile and nice weight." 2015 Mark Haisma Volnay Paux Bois, 94+ Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, tip top tipple – "Super wine this. Has a bright and crunchy freshness, cranberry juice flavour and acidity, in amongst redcurrant and raspberry, a pleasing perfume, a crack of spice, and grainy, almost stony tannin that drives it along beautifully, and a long gently herbal finish. It's lit! And brightly too. Love this wine. Has a transparency that charms thoroughly." Drink 2018-2032

2015 Mark Haisma Volnay Paux Bois, Jamie Goode, 93-95 Points -  "New vineyard for Mark, has white stone on top. Fresh, detailed and elegant with perfumed cherry and berry fruits with nice acid and structure. Quite mineral and fine with lovely precision."

2015 Mark Haisma Volnay Paux Bois, Jancis Robinson 17/20, Drink 2020-2028 - "Makes four barrels. From vineyards up near the woods, so different from the previous Volnay. First time he's ever used 10% whole bunch. Lively and fresh.  Racy and bracing. Big and crunchy.  Lovely stuff - very transparent."

2015 Mark Haisma Pommard 1er cru Clos de Arvelets, 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front,– "Red fruits, a little earthiness and spice, dried flowers. Bright and sappy, red fruits, grainy tannin with a slight orange peel and amaro flavour, lovely juiciness and firm but fair slatey tannin on a blood orange finish of convincing length. Charismatic.." Drink 2019-2035

2015 Mark Haisma Pommard 1er cru Clos de Arvelets, Jamie Goode, 92-94 Points - "Aromatic and quite floral. Fresh cherries and raspberries. Very attractive with nice density and subtle sappy notes. Lovely structure here with sweet fruit and perfume."

2015 Mark Haisma Pommard 1er cru Clos de Arvelets, Tim Atkins 93 Points

2015 Mark Haisma Morey-St- Denis 1er cru Les Chaffots, 95+ Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, tip top tipple – "Oh this is a creamy and spicy thing, with plenty of ripe cherry, vanilla, floral perfume and that sexy forest floor decay stuff, that Pinot Noir types like to bang on about. Fleshy, ripe red fruit, earth and clove spice, really sensual and juicy, with a bear skin rug of tannin, and a Barry White tune playing suggestively in the background, ooooo yeah, and then a fat roll of tannin on a long creamy cherry finish. It's all that. And a little something extra." Drink 2019-2035+

2013 Ruggeri Corsini Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, 93 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, tip top tipple, top value -  "It's a bit of a brute, for sure, but gee you're getting a lot of Nebbiolo for your money here. Dark cherry, liquorice, dusting of pepper and sweet spices, new leather, dried mint and flowers. It's full bodied, packed with spiced red and black fruit and inky black tea tannin, keeps fresh and tight, even more so with clean minerally acidity, and finishes long with strawberry, cherry and that potpourri perfume. And of course a mudslide of delicious grainy tannin. Throw it into a decanter now, or leave it for up to a decade. It's rugged, but very good.." Drink 2018-2026+

2014 Valter Musso Pora Barbaresco DOCG, 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front - "Lovely fragrance here with five spice, dried herbs, violet and raspberry, and almost something a bit like toffee apple, though not so sweet. Medium bodied, finely etched with cool acidity and dry grainy tannin,  but coupled to the succulence of bright red fruits, and a clean spicy finish ringing with cool acidity, perfume and crunchy tannin. Classic Barbaresco, you might say." Drink 2019-2029+

2014 Valter Musso Rio Sordo Barbaresco DOCG , 94 Points – Decanter

2016 Valter Musso Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, 93 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, tip top tipple – "Very purple and very fresh. Cherry, liquorice, spice and flower, with a subtle earthiness. Medium bodied, minerally crunch and lively feel, so fine and balanced, with a trail of iron and gravelly tannin. What a fine drink this is. Serious, yet so delightful." Drink 2017-2024+

2016 Paitin 'Sorì Paitin' Dolcetto d'Alba, 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front – "Cherry, strawberry, fennel and flowers, but quite deep and earthy. It's medium bodied, but has rare depth, a subtle fruit sweetness coupled with earthy and peppery stuff,  distinct ferrous and black tea tannin, and super length. In terms of Dolcetto, it must be near the top of the tree." Drink 2018-2028

2016 Monchiero Vignolo Rosato (Nebbiolo), 92 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front – "The signature of Nebbiolo is firmly printed on this wine, and naturally, that's just one more reason to really like it. Liquorice, cherry, a slight earthiness and dried herb and flower perfume. It has flesh and flavour, but feels fresh, and drinks well from front to back. Light chalkiness to close, and perhaps a kind of tangerine tang. It has the weight to stand up to some more robust dishes too, I'd suggest."

2015 Mark Haisma Saint Roman Blanc, 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, tip top tipple – "White peach, hazelnuts, white flowers and chamomile, a little spice and struck match. Fleshy and almost a honey nut cream flavour, but tight and citrus laden too, with a distinct flinty texture taking over, and a floral finish of fine length and precision. Grip and flesh. Gee, it's great to drink already, though no hurry, of course." Drink 2017-2025

2015 Mark Haisma Saint Roman Blanc, Bill Nanson – "A combination of the two vineyards from last year. 'It seemed really to deliver the best of both in one wine. Ooh, nice! A very faint oak padding but with a fine citrus. Layers, weight, a slow burn of acidity – really an understated acidity, but a growing mineral dimension to the finishing flavour. Super length too."

2015 Monchiero Langhe Arneis DOC, 91 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front -  "Plenty of flavour here, and I'm thinking green melon, apple, fennel seed, and wisp of smokiness, maybe some honey. Well rounded, almost creamy, slight flintiness, but has weight and flavour in its favour. Some lemon rind and grapefruit pith in the aftertaste tightens up the nuts. Here's a nice drink. I'm thinking it would be great with roast chicken."
